New Year Resolution Solutions – How to make 2017 rock!

The end of another year. As I was watching the review of the past 12 months on German television, I could not help but feel emotional – and yes, a dazzled Louise, my puppy, had to lick a few tears of my cheeks. I guess that in many ways, 2016 was terrible. Yet I refuse to say that it was all bad!

The fast pace and the quantity of the news around us are characteristics of the Aquarian Age: there is an information overflow – even overkill. It is the era of human Consciousness. It truly is the middle of a new beginning. As we say in Kundalini Yoga, it will be up to every individual to develop a strong self-sensory system. More of this later.

Beginning is also the motto of the December Newsletter-Blog. Beginnings have this characteristic that we have a lot of enthusiasm to make it different, to make it count. Yes, it is the time again of the big “R’s”: Resolutions.

Resolution solutions

To resolution or not to resolution

First things first. New Year’s Resolutions: not a big fan.
The classic ones being “lose weight, stop smoking, go to the gym” … I really don’t see why you have to wait until a New Year to make this decision.

If you want to make a change in your life, your aim is to make it last. Not just because the year is changing and it’s a custom. If you, however, use the New Year as a time to install sustainable changes, then it is a good time as any to start.

Make it a symbolic new beginning but you should not have to wait for January 1 to make a change.  If you require change then just do it.

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Change

Whether you like it or not, change is real. Sometimes changes are little, sometimes sudden, sometimes the changes make you happy, relieved, or sad.

It is called the course of life.
There is one certainty in the uncertainty: tomorrow will be different from today.

Why do we bring up resolutions in the first place? Most likely we decided that we had enough of the one or other drama. While I encourage you to make such decisions, today I will encourage you to reflect on the following, instead of making a list of New Year’s Resolutions:

Why are you grateful that 2016 happened?
What has 2016 taught you that no other year was able to do before?

Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.
Joseph Campbell

Backbone baby, backbone and guts!

One of the synonyms of resolution is intent. You set out with intention to do something in your life because you feel that something else has become obsolete.

The intent to set a resolution is often motivated intrinsically: displeasure, discomfort, the feeling that something is wrong. You tuned into your Third Eye or 6th chakra – your intuition. What is important is:

Are you strong enough to commit?

I intentionally say “strong” because once you realise how comfortable your old ways are, you need a lot of motivation to continue in your endeavour. There will be pain, there will be shedding of skin, there may even be tears. It takes backbone and guts to go through with it. But you know what? The results which flow are awesome.

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.
Maya Angelou

Of solutions and resolutions

In the word ‘resolution’ lies the word ‘solution’. A new year is about to begin – so how about bringing ‘solutions’ to 2017? Here are some I dare introduce:

Don’t do it again
If, upon reflecting on the past 12 months on New Year’s Eve, you find that something did not work out for you in 2016, don’t do it again in 2017! Sounds simple, does it not?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Albert Einstein

When the time is on you, start, and the pressure will be off.
3rd Sutra of the Aquarian Age. If you feel that something is not right, then that is probably a good sign to start from. Start somewhere. Just start. Take one little step and all the rest will follow from there.

If you want to be happy, be.
Leo Tolstoy

Self-sensory system
The development of the Self-Sensory System is one of the major themes of Yogi Bhajan’s later lectures. The human mind processes more information in one day than people had to process during an entire lifetime in the 1700’s. In response to these demands, humans are beginning to evolve a sensory system that allows them to live as intuitive, multi-faceted beings. We can cultivate our sensory system by consciously connecting to our breath, strengthening our nervous system, activating our glandular system, balancing our emotional energies, and channelling our mental energy to intuitive awareness. The best way to predict the future is to create it.
Peter Drucker

Balance
Being aware enough to notice, silent enough to listen, and spontaneous enough to act, may be the key to living the gift each moment of life offers.

You think, think, think all the time. You don’t slow down enough to experience what happens in each moment. Then without you knowing it, time races by.
Yogi Bhajan

Be authentic
If you want to make a difference in your life, and in the life of others, start with yourself. Cultivate a healthy body, clear your mind from garbage, grow, evolve, understand with compassion. Learn how to be love.

Just as breathing is the life of the body, love is the life of the soul – one is simply love. Osho

In Conclusion

Buddha says: “As a mirror reflects an object, as a still lake reflects the sky: take care that what you speak or act is for good. For goodness will always cast back goodness and harm will always cast back harm.” If you would like to make a resolution, I suggest you start with this.

And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been.
Rainer Maria Rilke

The Creator and the Creation are One.
